So I haven’t been very good at keeping up with my map per month goal (it seems that getting married and keeping up with new house work eats into hobby time), but I now finally have this map of my neighborhood to share. Kari doesn’t really understand why such a map should exist, but I think it’s cool! I wanted to try out some techniques in Gimp for making a textured map from GIS data. The data is from the City of Richmond’s GIS site. I made the textures from samples taken from Google Maps imagery. The final product has 18 total layers in Gimp. I used a tree brush I found at Cartographer’s Guild. The trees are placed randomly, but with some guidance from Google Map’s imagery.
